Road Construction on State Highways 7/16/17 to 7/22/17

The following is a summary of road construction and maintenance scheduled on state highways around Mason County and adjoining areas from July 16, 2017 to July 22, 2017.

CONSTRUCTION

SR 3 – Belfair Area – Widening and Safety Improvements
Highway:
 SR 3   Region: Olympic   County: Mason  Location: Milepost(s) 25.3 to 27
Description: This widening project extended the center turn lane and provided paved shoulders and sidewalks on both sides of SR 3.

SR 119 (Lake Cushman Road) chip seal Highway: SR 119 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s)
Description: Crews will resurface portions of SR 119 in areas between milepost .08 to 7.2
Work schedule: Drivers can expect reduced speed limits to 35 mph in the work zones. Drivers can expect one-way alternating traffic with a pilot car on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

SR 8 – Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek – Remove Fish Barriers
Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 4.3 to 7.5
Description: Crews will remove barriers to fish by constructing bridges across the Middle and East Forks of Wildcat Creek.

Work schedule: Westbound SR 8 is reconfigured to accommodate both directions of traffic. The SR 8 speed limit in the area is reduced to 45 mph. This reconfiguration is illustrated in this YouTube video.

The intersection of SR 8 and SR 108 in McCleary is closed to all traffic around the clock through summer 2019. During the closure, drivers headed to McCleary will be directed to the Mox Chehalis Road interchange.

MAINTENANCE
Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 345.6 
Description: Utility crews will relocate natural gas pipeline. Drivers using Wallace Kneeland Boulevard on-ramp to southbound US 101 will encounter right shoulder closures and brief traffic stops. Drivers using southbound US 101 will also encounter right shoulder closures.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each weekday through Friday, July 21.

Highway: SR 102 (Dayton Airport Road) Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 1.5 to 2
Description: Asphalt preservation. Drivers can expect one-way alternating traffic.
Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, July 17.

Highway: SR 106 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 1.3 to 1.6
Description: Bridge inspection. One-way alternating traffic.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 19.

Highway: SR 300 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 0 to 3.3
Description: Asphalt preservation. One-way alternating traffic.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, July 18-19

Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 0 to 20
Description: Vegetation management. Right shoulder and occasional right lane closures for mobile operation.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 17-20.

Highway: SR 108 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 2 to 12
Description: Vegetation management. Right shoulder and occasional lane closures for mobile operation.
Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 17-20.

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Jefferson Location: Milepost(s) 275 to 294
Description: Debris removal. Drivers can expect to encounter occasional shoulder closures with lane encroachment for mobile operation.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 17-27.

Highway: SR 302 Region: Olympic County: Pierce Location: Milepost(s) 15. to 15.8
Description:  Purdy Spit bridge will close to all traffic for asphalt repairs.
During the night closure, drivers will follow a 3-mile signed detour that uses 94th Avenue Northwest, Southeast Pine Road, and Bethel Burley Road Southeast.
Work Schedule: From 9 p.m. Monday, July 24, until 4 a.m. Tuesday, July 25.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention – Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you – Most work zone accidents involve someone running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively – be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone.
  • Don’t use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
