Road Construction on State Highways 6/25/17 to 7/1/17

The following is a summary of road construction and maintenance scheduled on state highways around Mason County and adjoining areas from June 25, 2017 to July 1, 2017.


SR 119 (Lake Cushman Road) chip seal
Highway: SR 119 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s)
Description: Crews will resurface portions of SR 119 in areas between milepost .08 to 7.2
Work schedule: Drivers can expect reduced speed limits to 35 mph in the work zones. Drivers can expect one-way alternating traffic with a pilot car on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

SR 3 – Belfair Area – Widening and Safety Improvements

Highway: SR 3   Region: Olympic   County: Mason  Location: Milepost(s) 25.3 to 27
Description: This widening project will extend the center turn lane and provide paved shoulders and sidewalks on both sides of SR 3. The improvements are intended to be built in two separate stages.

Work schedule:  Drivers can expect alternating one-way traffic with flaggers during nighttime work.

SR 8 – Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek – Remove Fish Barriers
Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 4.3 to 7.5
Description: Crews will remove barriers to fish by constructing bridges across the Middle and East Forks of Wildcat Creek.

Work schedule: Westbound SR 8 is reconfigured to accommodate both directions of traffic. The SR 8 speed limit in the area is reduced to 45 mph. This reconfiguration is illustrated in this YouTube video.

The intersection of SR 8 and SR 108 in McCleary is closed to all traffic around the clock through summer 2019. During the closure, drivers headed to McCleary will be directed to the Mox Chehalis Road interchange.

SR 8 W of Old Sand Crk. Rd. to Jct. US 101 – Paving
Highway: 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 6.75 – 11.5 and 17.25 – 20.63
Description: Crews will repave sections of SR 8 between US 101 in Thurston County and McCleary.
Work Schedule: While work is under way, portions of westbound SR 8 will reduce to one lane. The single-lane closures are scheduled to occur between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. each weekday. Weather permitting, the work will be complete before July.


Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Thurston Location: Milepost(s) 358.3 to 359.1
Description: Utility work. Drivers can expect a northbound single-lane closure.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 5

Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 0 to 20
Description: Vegetation management. Drivers can expect a mobile shoulder closure with periodic lane encroachment.
Work Schedule: 7:30a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursdays, June 29 through July 6.

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Jefferson Location: Milepost(s) 274.6 to 294
Description: Vegetation management. Drivers in both directions can expect to encounter shoulder closures.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, June 8-29.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention – Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you – Most work zone accidents involve someone running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively – be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone.
  • Don’t use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
