Road Construction on State Highways 3/12/17 to 3/18/17

The following is a summary of road construction and maintenance scheduled on state highways around Mason County and adjoining areas from March 12, 2017 to March 18, 2017.

SR 8 – Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek – Remove Fish Barriers
Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 5 to 6.3
Description: Crews will remove barriers to fish. Beginning spring 2017, SR 8 will be reduced to one lane in each direction through summer 2019. The SR 8 speed limit will be temporarily reduced from 60 mph to 45 mph for the duration of the two-year project.

Work schedule: 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 13-17. Drivers can expect additional day and night single-lane and shoulder closures in both directions.

Highway: SR 3   Region: Olympic   County: Mason  Location: Milepost(s) 25.3 to 27
Description: This widening project will extend the center turn lane and provide paved shoulders and sidewalks on both sides of SR 3. The improvements are intended to be built in two separate stages.

Work schedule: Drivers can expect one-lane alternating traffic with flaggers each weeknight from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning.

On Thursday, March 16 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Washington State Patrol and a flagging crew will direct traffic through the intersection of SR 3 and Northeast Clifton Lane while crews run final test and make adjustments to the newly installed signal.

SR 302 – N of E Victor Rd – Culvert Replacement

Highway: SR 302 Region: Olympic County: Mason  Location: Milepost(s) 4.5
Description: Crews will replace two failing culverts and install infrastructure to help stabilize the highway.

Work schedule:  This project remains on standby due to weather. Work requires seven consecutive days of dry weather.


Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 332.24
Description: Utility crews will install water line infrastructure. Drivers can expect one-way alternating traffic with flaggers.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, March 15-17.

Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 0 to 20
Description: Cable rail inspection. Drivers can expect left lane closures in both directions.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 15-16.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention – Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you – Most work zone accidents involve someone running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively – be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone.
  • Don’t use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
