The Mary M. Knight girls’ basketball team came up a point short of Three Rivers Christian Wednesday night in the 2017 Southwest District 4 Class 1B Basketball Tournament. The Owls lost to the Eagles 44 to 43 in the game played at Adna High School and streamed live on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
MMK had an early five-point lead before TRC rallied and led by seven.
The second quarter saw the Eagles’ lead increase to eight before the Owls responded and tied the game at 18. Three Rivers Christian had a 21 to 18 lead at the half.
In the third, it was Mary M. Knight building a nine-point lead only to see the Eagles cut that in half.
The fourth quarter was back-and-fourth with TRC up four until the 3:33 mark when MMK tied it. A minute and a half later, the Owls held a two point lead. The Eagles responded and were up one with 13 seconds left.
Kaylee Sowle had a chance to put the Owls up by one but her shot popped out of the rim and the rebound was knocked out of bounds by Three Rivers Christian with 6.6 seconds remaining. Mary M. Knight still had possession but Jadyn Davidson couldn’t handle a lob at the left low post and the ball again went out of play, this time off an Owl. All the Eagles had to do was run out the last 1.3 seconds to take third in the District.
Three Rivers Christian had three players score in double digits: Hannah Cathcart had 13, Olivia Cathcart added 12, and Selena Carns finished with 11.
Mary M. Knight’s Kaylee Sowle led all scorers with 30 points. Mary Koonrad hit two three-pointers. Sarah Roberts added a three. Jayden Davidson scored a basket. And Shawqueea Parker hit two free throws.
