The Shelton girls’ basketball team’s season came to an end Saturday in the 2017 West Central / Southwest District Tournament as the Highclimbers lost to Yelm 57 to 55.
Shelton had an early six-point lead but the Tornados tied the game at 14 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the game continued to be close with Yelm going up two at the half 30 to 28.
The game changed in the third as the Tornados outscored the Highclimbers 18 to 10 and had a ten-point lead heading into the fourth.
The final quarter saw Yelm’s lead increase to 12 and the Tornados maintained that lead until about three minutes left when Shelton made their run, scoring after forcing turnovers and cutting the deficit to two with about 20 seconds to go. The ‘Climbers stole the ball on three consecutive Yelm possessions in the final minute.
On Yelm’s last position, leading by two, Chloe Zimmerman was fouled and went to the free throw line. She missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Highclimbers a chance but time ran out before Jordyn Peterson could get off the last-second shot.
The Tornados were led by Kaitlin Jewell’s 17 points. Zimmerman finished with 16. And Kylee Sweeney chipped int 13.
Shelton’s Paige Johnson dominated the paint in the first three quarters of the game, leading all scorers with 18. Jasmine Griffin added 10. Katie Johnson finished with 8. Jordyn Peterson and Kayla Gairns each had 6. Timber Ware chipped in 4. And Decheiya Littlesun hit a three-pointer.
The Lady Highclimbers finished the season with and 11-and-11 record, making the playoffs for the second year in a row.
