Basketball: Shelton Falls to Yelm; NM Boys Win, Girls Lose;

The Shelton boys’ basketball team couldn’t overcome the three-point shooting of Yelm Thursday night as the Highclimbers dropped their season finale 64 to 55.

The Tornados hit nine three-pointers in the game, eight in the first half, to build a 21-point first half lead. Shelton was able to close the gap to eight points in the second half but couldn’t finish the comeback.

Yelm was led by Jacob McCown’s 16 points – hitting five three-pointers. Trent Lawton added 14 points – hitting 8 of 11 free throws.

River Allen – in his first varsity start – led Shelton in the loss with 21 points. Tyler Giraldes and Casey Badillo-Brown each added seven points. Kyle Kimball chipped in 6. Travis Colbenson scored 5. Caeleb Hitsman had 4 points. Jason Kenyon hit a three. and Jha’mal Johson made two free throws.

The Highclimbers ended the season with a 5-and-16 overall record, 1-and-13 in the South Sound Conference.
The Shelton girls’ basketball team lost their regular season finale at Yelm Thursday 55 to 35. The Highclimbers rebounded from a two-point first quarter to outscore the Tornados 17 to 9 in the second quarter but were still down four at the half. The third quarter saw Yelm hold Shelton to six points and increased their lead to ten. The Tornados doubled their lead in the fourth quarter.
Paige Johnson led the ‘Climbers in the loss with 11 points. Katie Johnson added 10 points.
Shelton finished the regular season with an 11-and-9 overall record, 6-and-9 in the South Sound Conference and take the fifth seed into next week’s West Central / Southwest District Tournament. The Highclimbers play Bethel in the first round Thursday night at 7:45 PM. The game is being played at Timberline High School. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will broadcast the game live online.

The North Mason boys’ basketball team picked up their second Olympic League win Thursday knocking off Bremerton 52 to 43. The Bulldogs outscored the Knights 37-31 in the second half. Trey Fisher led the boys from Belfair with 23 points. Jonah Ness added 11 points. North Mason finished the season with a 7-and-12 overall record, 2-and-10 in the Olympic League.

The North Mason girls’ basketball team wrapped up the season with a 49 to 27 loss at Bremerton. The Lady Bulldogs finish the season with a 3-and-16 record.
