The Shelton boys’ basketball team stayed close to Gig Harbor Friday but the Highclimbers couldn’t quite catch the Tides and lost 58 to 50 on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
The Highclimbers were held to six points in the first quarter and were down by as many as eight but in the second quarter it was the Tides who were held to six points and Shelton had a one-point lead at the half thanks to Caeleb Hitsman’s 8 points in the quarter.
The ‘Climbers went up four early in the third but Gig Harbor responded and led by five going into the fourth behind the three-point shooting of Avery Jones (who hit three) and Collin Brooks (who hit two).
The Tides then increased their lead to 12 in the fourth quarter but Shelton whittled that down to six but couldn’t complete the comeback as Gig Harbor’s Patrick Fredrickson hit 5 of 8 free throws to maintain its lead.
Fredrickson finished with 16 points and went 6 for 12 at the line for the game. Jones was the other leading scorer for the Tides also with 16 points.
Hitsman led the Highclimbers in the loss with 15 points. Tyler Giraldes added 13. Kyle Kimball finished with 10. Marshall McCullough scored 9. Jason Kenyon scored 3. And Travis Colbenson had 2.
Shelton dropped its fifth game and now have a 5-and-10 overall record, 1-and-8 in the SSC. They travel to North Thurston Monday.
The Shelton girls’ basketball team couldn’t recover from a two-point first quarter and lost at Gig Harbor 80 to 33. The Tides had three players score in double digits: Emily Shields with 22, Maddie Willett with 21 and Brynna Maxwell with 16. Jasmine Girffin led the Highclimbers in the loss with 9 points.
Gig Harbor remained perfect in the South Sound Conference at 10-and-0, 12-and-3 overall. Shelton is now 9-and-6 on the season, 4-and-5 in the SSC – in fourth place in the standings, a half game ahead of Yelm with five games remaining. The North Mason boys’ basketball team lost to Kingston 67 to 36 with Buccaneers’ Gabe Gregory and Isaac Anderson each posting 13 points. Trey Fisher led North Mason with 22. The Bulldogs are now 6-and-9 on the season, 1-and-7 overall. They travel to North Kitsap Tuesday.
The North Mason girls’ basketball team came up short of Kingston falling 36 to 29. The Lady Bulldogs are still winless in Olympic League play and are 3-and-12 on the season. The girls from Belfair host North Kitsap Tuesday.
The Mary M. Knight girls’ basketball team held Oakville to two points in the first, second and third quarters and the Lady Owls beat the Lady Acorns 37 to 11. Kaylee Sowle led MMK with 22 points and Kalah Ralph added 10. The Mary M. Knight girls are now 6-and-6 on the season, 5-and-2 in the Coastal League. They travel to Naselle on Tuesday.
