The Shelton boys’ basketball team lost to River Ridge Wednesday in the North Thurston Holiday Tournament. The final score of the game broadcast on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC was the Hawks 58, the Highclimbers 56.
The difference in the game for Shelton was missed free throws and too many turnovers. The Highclimbers only made 4 of 13 free throw attempts (30.7%) and committed 20 turnovers – 12 in the second half.
River Ridge was a bit better at the line hitting 7 of 16 (43.75%) but cleaned up their act in the second half. The Hawks committed 10 turnovers in the first half but finished with 13 for the game which allowed RR to rally from 8 points down in the third quarter to pull with in 2 heading into the fourth and go up 4 at one point in the final period.
Shelton had a chance to tie the game with two-tenths of a second remaining but Tyler Giraldes missed two free throws and River Ridge ended a two-game losing skid.
The Hawks were led by Alex Coleman’s 18 points (hitting three 3-pointers and going 4 for 4 at the free throw line). Jordan Skipper-Brown and Josh Kennedy each added 10 points.
The Highclimbers’ Kyle Kimball had 20 points in the loss. Marshall McCullough added 13. And Tyler Giraldes finished with 9. Travis Colbenson in his second start chipped in 5 points. Freshman Ty Thompson scored 4 points in his first varsity action. Caleb Hitsman had 3 and Jason Kenyon added 2.
Shelton evened its record at 4-and-4 while River Ridge improved to 6-and-3 on the season.
Next up for the Highclimbers is Tumwater as they wrap up the North Thurston Holiday Tournament. The game tips off at 5:15 PM and MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will broadcast the game live.
Meanwhile, the Shelton girls’ basketball team suffered their second loss of the season Wednesday night falling to Olympic in non-league action 50 to 45. The Lady Highclimbers are off until next Wednesday when they travel to Peninsula.
