Football: SHS & NM Drop Week 9 Games

The Shelton football team couldn’t keep up with Capital Friday night as the Highclimbers lost to the Cougars on senior night 42 to 14.

The Highclimbers started the game with big defensive plays: Kyle Kimball interception ending the Cougars’ first drive and Gage Peterson (with the help of Kimball) blocked a 26-yard field goal attempt on Capital’s second drive.

A Cougars’ intecption on Shelton’s next play set up their first touchdown: a 12-yard TD pass from Chris Penner to Chris Schnellman. Capital extended their lead on their next drive going 90 yards on 14 plays capped by Penner catching a five-yard TD pass from Carson Bertilli.

The ‘Climbers got on the board in the second quarter after Kimball picked off his second pass and Shelton marched 41 yards on five plays with Tyler Giraldes diving into the end zone from a yard out.

Capital added another TD before the first half ended driving 38 yards on seven plays and Nathan Tyler punching it in from a yard out. The teams headed to the locker room with the Cougars up 21 to 7.

The third quarter say Capital pick up where they left off taking their first possession 76 yards on five plays, a drive that included a 54-yard TD pass from Bertilli to Chase Martin.

The Cougars struck seconds later as Jack Collard picked off a Giraldes pass and returned it some 35 yards for another Capital touchdown. That pick-six put the Cougars up 35 to 7.

Shelton responded on their next drive going 60 yards on three plays that included a pass interference penalty, a Skyler Ross diving catch and Willy Ruiz taking a Giraldes pass 30 yards for the TD, making it 35 to 14. Unfortunately, that was it for the Highclimbers’ scoring.

Capital was able to put together another long drive – 95 yards on ten plays – with Tyler getting into the end zone for the second time and the game ended with the Cougars winning their fourth game in a row 42 to 14.

Capital finished with 361 yards of offense: 176 in the air and 185 on the ground. The Cougars have a 6-and-3 record, 5-and-2 in the South Sound Conference, and are playoff bound.

Shelton had 265 yards of offense with Tyler Giraldes completing 11 of 26 passes for 158 yards, two touchdowns (one rushing, one passing) and three interceptions. Willy Ruiz finished with 87 yards rushing, 30 yards passing and a touchdown. The Highclimbers drop to 3-and-6 on the season, 2-and-5 is SSC play. They finish up the season against Wilson at Stadium Bowl next Friday. The Rams are also 3-and-6. The game will be on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.


The North Mason football team on their rescheduled Homecoming was shut out by Bremerton 40 to 0. The Bulldogs drop to 1-and-7 on the season, 1-and-5 in the Olympic League. The boys from Belfair will be hosting Tenino in their cross over game next Friday. (NM has yet to schedule a make up date for their game with Fork that was postponed October 14th due to weather.)
