The Shelton football team handed Yelm their first loss of the season as the Highclimbers beat the Tornados 36 to 28.

Shelton struct first, driving 90 yards on 14 play, capped by a nine-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Giraldes to Kiyle Kimball. The ‘Climbers increased their lead, set up by Skyler Ross’ second interception, on a 13-yard TD pass from Giraldes to Marshall McCullough. Yelm responded, going 73 yards in nine plays and then took advantage of a Shelton fumble and tied the game at 14 heading to the locker room at the half.

The Highclimbers took their third quarter opening drive 71 yards in eight plays with  Willy Ruiz reaching the end zone putting Shelton up 20 to 14 after their failed two-point conversion attempt. The teams exchanged punts before Ross picked off his third pass of the game which set up a 64-yard drive capped by a six-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Toney, making the score 26 to 14 after yet another failed two-point conversion.

The Tornadoes got back in the game by returning the ensuing kick off to Shelton’s 14 yard line and one play later Yelm’s Brandon Thompson found the end zone bringing the score to 26 to 21.

The Climbers’ Kimball caught his second TD pass early in the fourth to increase the lead to 33-21. Then on the kick off, Shelton surprised the Tornados with an on-side kick which the Highclimbers recovered on their 47. They drove to the Yelm nine yard line before the drive stalled and Shelton’s Kody Bragg kicked a 29-yard field goal.

The Tornados added another TD before the Highclimbers were able to run out the clock.
