A homemade explosive commonly referred to as a “Sparkler Bomb” was located by a man walking his dog at Belfair State Park. The Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad responded to the scene following a brief investigation by Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
A park employee was handed the device by the park visitor who immediately removed the item to the park maintenance shop area of the park. Park employees then called 9-1-1.
Once deputies arrived and determined that the device appeared to be a possible explosive, they evacuated the immediate area and notified the WSP Bomb Squad.
The Bomb Squad x-rayed the suspected explosive and chose to collect the device for destruction at a secure location.
Chief Ryan Spurling said, “We are grateful for the quick report by the Belfair State Park employees and for our partnership with the Washington State Patrol to resolve this matter safely.”
No other suspicious items were located in the area and the park was reopened to visitors.
The Mason County Sheriff’s Office would like to encourage the public to leave anything that looks suspicious in place and call 9-1-1.
