Members of the seven school boards in Mason County met with 35th District State Representatives Drew MacEwen and Dan Griffey Monday night. (Senator Tim Sheldon was invited but was unable to attend.) Officials from Pioneer, Hood Canal, Grapeview, Mary M. Knight, North Mason, Southside and Shelton school districts wanted to make sure the legislators know the challenges each faces.
Topping the list was fully funding education. However, other issues came to light including a simple majority vote to pass bonds, having enough funds to attract and recruit quality teachers, unfunded or underfunded mandates, fees accessed to non-high or feeder school districts, and the Open Public Meetings Act as it relates to public records requests.
In the end, school officials just wanted to remind the legislators to keep fighting for schools and pass these issues on to their colleagues in Olympia.
