The Mary M. Knight girls’ basketball team upset Naselle Monday 52 to 48 and advanced to the Class 1B Southwest District Title game:
The Owls jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Comets bounced back to take a 16-11 lead after the first quarter.
The second quarter went to the girls from Matlock behind the three-point shooting of Jaycee Valley and Kaylee Sowle, leading by five points at one time before heading to the locker room with a 32-30 halftime lead.
The third quarter was played pretty evenly with MMK up up six before Naselle closed to 41 to 38.
Free throws were the difference in the fourth. The Owls went to the charity stripe six times in the quarter compared to just twice for the Comets. Mary M. Knight went six for 11 in the quarter and 9 for 15 for the game. Naselle was 4 for 4 in the fourth and 9 for 13 for the game.
The Owls also forced the Comets into 14 turnovers while only committing 11 turnovers.
MMK was led in the game by Kaylee Sowle who scored 26 points, at least five steals and going 5 for 7 at the free throw line. Jaycee Valley added 19 points hitting five three-pointers and going 4 for 5 at the free throw line. Jadyn Davidson had 4 points. And Mary Koonrad hit one of the Owls eight three-pointers.
Mary M. Knight faces Taholah for the District Championship at 4:30 PM Saturday. The game is being played at Montesano High School. MasonWebTV.com and Hood Canal Communications’ HCC.net will provide a live video stream of the game.
