The League of Women Voters of Mason County and the Mason County Senior Activities Association held a candidates’ forum Tuesday afternoon at the Mason County Senior Activities Center at the Pavilion in Shelton. This forum featured the candidates running for Port of Shelton Commission, Shelton Mayor, Shelton City Commission of Finance & Accounting, and the Shelton School Board.
The candidates for the Shelton School Board were grouped together.
Current board members Sandy Tarzwell and Cheryl Williams are facing off for Director District #1. Sally Brownfield takes on William (Bill) Shanahan for Position #1. Terry C Miller and Keri Davidson are running for Position #2. And Ginger Seslar is facing Ross Gallagher for Director District #2 Ginger Seslar Ross Gallagher. Ms. Seslar was not in attendance Tuesday which created a dilemma for the League. Sandra Herndon, the moderator, explains how the League of Women Voters handles this type of situation:
As a result, Ross Gallagher was only allowed to give opening and closing statements.
The other six candidates then answered three questions.
The first question: What is your view on how the pool should be managed That is who should be responsible for owning, funding and maintaining? The School District? The City? The County? The Hospital? And how would that decision affect the School District’s long-range budget plan?
The second question: What do you think the School Board needs do to bring the graduation rates up?
The final question: What is your view of teacher unions?
The Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce, Hood Canal Communications, and MasonWebTV.com are holding another candidates’ forum 6 PM Thursday night at the Student Union Building (SUB) at the Shelton High School.
