The Shelton Education Association (SEA) hosted a forum for the eight candidates running for four Shelton School Board positions Tuesday night.
Running for Director District #1 are Sandy Tarzwell and Cheryl Williams. Running for Director District #2 are Ginger Seslar and Ross Gallagher. Running for Position #1 are Sally Brownfield and William (Bill) Shanahan. And running for Position #2 are Terry C Miller and Keri Davidson.
The candidates were asked six questions, three from the SEA and three from the audience.
First question: What are your qualifications for Shelton School Board and why are you seeking the position?
Second question: What are the components of a successful school district?
Third question: What role do you see the Shelton School Board having in our community and what is your vision for the Shelton School District?
The first question from the audience: Are you willing to raise salaries for teachers to an amount that is competitive with adjacent districts?
Next question from the audience: Can you tell us you philosophy on the importance of athletes and activities to our school, community and youth, and how its engagement reflects on pride, leadership and accountability?
And the final question of the night: Where do you see the Shelton School District in the next 10 years?
There are several additional candidates’ forums next week.
The League of Women Voters of Mason County and the Mason County Senior Activities Association have a forum scheduled for 2 PM Tuesday, October 13th at the Senior Center at the Pavilion, 190 W. Sentry Drive in Shelton (behind Gillis Auto Center). This forum will feature the Shelton School Board candidates as well as those running for Shelton Mayor (Marilyn Vogler and Gary H. Cronce), Shelton Commissioner of Finance & Accounting (Kathy McDowell and Mike Olsen) and Port of Shelton Commissioner (Sue Patterson and Tom Wallitner).
The same candidates will be attending a forum put on by the Shelton Mason County Chamber of Commerce, Hood Canal Communications and MasonWebTV.com at 6 PM Thursday, October 15 in the Shelton High School SUB (Student Union Building). This forum will be streamed live on MasonWebTV.com and Hood Canal Communications’ HCC.net.
