Firefighter responded to a structure fire at the corner of South 10th Street and Railroad Avenue in Shelton Monday evening that turned out to be a fatality. According to Central Mason Fire & EMS Chief Tim McKern, the call came in at 5:01 PM and emergency responders were at the two-story house within minutes.
There were two people in the house when the fire started in the kitchen on the first floor and then spread to the second story. One person was able to escape but the other person was trapped on the second floor and died in the blaze.
Shelton Police Chief Darren Moody told MasonWebTV.com that officers were the first to arrive but were unable to reach the person trapped on the second floor.
Name of the deceased has not been released. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Other agencies to respond to this fire included Mason County Fire Districts 4 & 11, Washington State Patrol, Squaxin Island Police, Mason County PUD 3, and the Mason County Coroner’s Office.
