The Shelton football team opened the 2015 season by winning the 4th Annual Mason County Cup 35 to 21 over North Mason Friday night.
The Highclimbers scored first on the second play from scrimmage: a 42-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Giraldes to Kyle Kimball. Tanner Rhodes punched it in from two yards out and with Willy Ruiz’s run for a 2-point conversion Shelton was up 14-0 midway through the 1st quarter.
The Bulldogs got on the board when quarterback Preston Poulton went 57 yards to make the score 14-7 with 2:36 to go in the 1st.
Shelton added to its lead late in the 2nd quarter when Giraldes found Skyler Ross in the end zone from 28 yards out and the ‘Climbers had a 21-7 lead at the half.
In the 3rd quarter, Shelton’s Colton Paller made it 28-7 with a 45-yard touchdown run.
The boys’ from Belfair responded when Poulton scored his second TD on a 17-yard run.
Giraldes capped the Highclimbers’ scoring with his third touchdown pass, this time a 12-yard strike to Ruiz.
North Mason found the end zone one more time in the 4th when Mac Jones plunged in from a yard out.
Shelton has now won three of the four Mason County Cups.
The Highclimbers have their home opener next Friday when they host Sumner.
North Mason hits the road next week playing Elma Thursday in Hoquiam.
Mary M. Knight football team lost its season opener to Seattle Lutheran 60 to 8 Saturday. No other details were reported the Owl eight-man football team host Quilcene next Saturday 1 PM.
