In honor of Christmas, Shelton First Baptist Church is hosting a ‘Giving Tree’ in December to help meet Love INC clients’ needs for cold weather items such as sleeping bags, blankets, tents, tarps, hats and gloves. Congregants will select a card from the tree that names a needed item. Donations will be collected at the Love INC office, stored in Love INC’s distribution center, and handed out as needs arise. The local Care Net Pregnancy Center is also part of the Giving Tree.

“Our tree’s theme is ‘Love Like Jesus’. He cared for widows and orphans and taught us to care for others like He did so that people will know we are his disciples,” said Shelton FBC Administrative Assistant, Natalie Hamilton.

She said that over the years, FBC’s Giving Tree has focused on various themes, including Christville School in Haiti and community families in need, but this year, the pastors chose to bless two local ministries: Love INC, and Care Net Pregnancy Center.

Love INC Board President, Bill Kendrick, said the Love INC Board is pleased and overwhelmed that Shelton FBC chose to honor Love INC in this way.

“It’s the cold season now and people need help staying warm. It’s amazing how many people need things like blankets, sleeping bags, tents and tarps right now, so I was really blessed when the FBC ministers told us they had selected Love INC,” said Kendrick.

The donated items do not have to be brand new, he explained, but they do need to be clean, and in good condition.

“My wife, Carol, helps take care of donated items and will do laundry, sort, and fold. She likes to keep the donation center looking nice when people come in for items, and our volunteers love to be able to tell them, this is a gift from the Lord,” Kendrick said.

He emphasized that Love INC is all about giving a hand-up, not a hand-out.

“This ministry helps people get back on their feet after things like a death, divorce, or a job loss. It’s heartwarming when you feel you can give someone real help, and it’s always gratifying when they come back after they’re stable and say, ‘I’m going to help others now,’” said Kendrick.
