MMK logoThe Mary M. Knight football team picked up its second win of the season Thursday, knocking off the Washington School for the Deaf 41 to 30. The Owls now have an overall record of 3-and-4 with wins over the Terriers and Oakville, and a forfiet by Muckleshoot. The boys from Matlock travel to Aberdeen on October 25 to take on the Twin Valley Wolfpack at 1 PM.

SHS axThe  Shelton football team lost to North Thurston 28 to 14 Friday. The Highclimbers’ Jake Henry had touchdown runs of 3 yards and 12 yards. Shelton drops to 1-and-6 on the season – still winless in the 3A Narrows League. The ‘Climbers travel to Mount Tahoma next Friday to face the 1-and-6 Thunderbirds.

NM bulldogNorth Mason fell to Olympic 36 to 20 Friday.  The Bulldogs’ Matt Becker threw two touchdown passes (24 yards to Daniel Burggraaf and 20 yards to Hunter Hohman). Burggraaf also picked up a Trojan fumble and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown and caught a pass from Becker for a two-point conversion.  The boys from Belfair drop to 3-and-4 on the season, 2-and-3 in the Olympic League. North Mason travels to Bremerton next Friday to face the 2-and-5 Knights.

  1. Here is how I see it when it comes to the North Mason football team and the potential for post season play.

There are four playoff spots for the Olympic League. North Kitsap and Olympic have pretty much locked in the number 1 and number 2 spots. Both are 4-and-0 in League play with two games remaining. They will face off on Oct. 31 and that game will likely determine the League Champion and top seed.

If you look at the rest of the standings, Sequim and Port Angeles are 2-2 in the Olympic League while North Mason is 2-3. I guess you can say Sequim and PA are tied for 3rd and NM is 5th. The Bulldogs have played one more League game than the others. They play at Bremerton next Friday and take on Klahowya in Silverdale on Halloween.

North Mason must win out and get a little help to force a tiebreaker.

As I see it, the Bremerton game is a must win as the Knights are a 2A Olympic League team while the Klahowya Eagles are in the 1A Olympic League. Although I’m not positive, a loss to the Eagles shouldn’t impact the Bulldogs in the 2A but another “W” wouldn’t hurt.

When you look at the remaining games for each team, the likely outcome for the season will be a three-way tie between NM, PA and Sequim. In head to head games, none of the teams have an edge over the others. (NM beat PA but lost to Sequim while PA beat Sequim.) I don’t know if that would mean a tiebreaker game of some kind or a drawing or coin flip or what. The League will determine that.

We all know anything can happen but here are my predictions for the rest of the season match ups.
Port Angeles hosts North Kitsap next week. That will likely result in a Roughrider loss. PA then travels to Kingston. Now the Bucs only lost by a touchdown to both NM and Sequim, so this will not be an easy game on the road for the Riders. As much as I would like to see a PA loss, I do expect the opposite.
Sequim travels to Silverdale next Friday to face Olympic. This is an early game and well based on what we’ve seen so far this season, the Trojans will likely be victorious. The Wolves then host Bremerton. The Knights are sitting at the bottom of the standings so I would expect Sequim will roll to the win.

When I say the Bulldogs need a little help, I mean they need either or both PA and Sequim to fall in both their remaining games to secure a playoff spot.

MasonWebTV.com hopes to follow the Bulldogs when they make the playoffs!

    A side note here:
I’m not ignoring Shelton or Mary M. Knight.
The Highclimbers are still rebuilding and play in such a tough league it may take a couple more years for them to be a contender again.
The Owls are doing better this year and of late winning 2 of their last three games but their road is difficult. The boys from Matlock face 5-and-2 Twin Valley next Saturday and then host Lyle/Wishram on Nov. 1. Might be able to go watch that game.
