A shoplifter died one day after a Mason County Sheriff’s Deputy and a security guard performed CPR. According to a news release, the Sheriff’s Office was called to the Safeway Store in Belfair about 5 PM Sunday regarding a suspect stealing a shopping cart filled with alcoholic beverages and other items. The suspect fled when the store’s loss prevention agent contacted him outside the store. When Deputy Chris Mondry arrived on the scene, the agent pointed out the direction where the suspect was last seen jumping over two fences. The Deputy found the suspect lying on the ground. He failed to respond to commands and was not breathing. Mondry called for an aid unit, retrieved a first aid kit from his patrol vehicle and requested assistance from the security guard. Both men performed CPR on the suspect until medics arrived. The shoplifter was then transported to Harrison Hospital in Bremerton where he died Monday. The Kitsap County Coroner’s Office identified the suspect as Joseph M. Price, 48 of Belfair. An an autopsy was performed Tuesday and results are pending toxicology. Authorities say Price had multiple felony warrants for his arrest and had previous felony convictions.
